Terpenes
Terpenes are aromatic oils in plants. In cannabis they concentrate in trichomes and shape smell and taste — citrus, pine, herbal, diesel, and more.
Five you will see on labels often:
- Myrcene — herbal, earthy; common in many relaxing cultivars.
- Pinene — pine.
- Caryophyllene — spicy.
- Limonene — citrus.
- Humulene — earthy.
Terpenes are not intoxicating the way THC is. CBD is also non-intoxicating by itself. Together with cannabinoids they make up a product's profile — what people mean by “entourage” in casual conversation. You will find terpenes in flower, concentrates, tinctures, vapes, and some edibles.
